Six toxic thoughts successful people quarantine

Six toxic thoughts successful people quarantineSix toxic thoughts successful people quarantineYour self-talk (the thoughts you have about your feelings) can make or break your career. When you make a mistake, they either magnify the negativity or help you turn that misstep into something productive.Negative self-talk is unrealistic, unnecessary, and self-defeating. It sends you into a downward emotional spiral that is difficult to pull out of.All self-talk is driven by important beliefs that you hold about yourself. It plays an understated but powerful role in success because it can both spur you forward to achieve your goals and hold you back.He who believes he can and he who believes he cannot are both correct. Henry FordTalentSmarthas tested the emotional intelligence (EQ) of mora than a million people and found that 90% of top performers are high in EQ. These successful, high EQ individuals possess an important skill- the ability to recognize and control negative self-talk so th at it doesnt prevent them from reaching their full potential.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThese successful people earn an average of $28,000 more annually than their low EQ peers, get promoted more often, and receive higher marks on performance evaluations. The link between EQ and earnings is so direct that every point increase in EQ adds $1,300 to an annual salary. When it comes to self-talk, weve discovered some common thoughts that hold people back more than any others. Be mindful of your tendencies to succumb to behauptung thoughts, so that they dont derail your careerPerfection equals successHuman beings, by our very nature, are fallible. When perfection is your goal, youre always left with a nagging sense of failure, and end up spending your time lamenting what you failed to accomplish, instead of enjoying what you were able to achieve. My destiny is predeterminedFar too many people succumb to the highly irrational idea that they are destined to succeed or fail. Make no mistake about it, your destiny is in your own hands, and blaming multiple successes or failures on forces beyond your control is nothing more than a cop out. Sometimes life will deal you difficult cards to play, and others times youll be unternehmensverbund aces. Your willingness to give your all in playing any hand youre holding determines your ultimate success or failure in life.I always or never do thatThere isnt anything in life that you always or never do. You may do something a lot or not do something enough, but framing your behavior in terms of always or never is a form of self-pity. It makes you believe that you have no control of yourself and will never change. Dont succumb to it.I succeed when others approve of meRegardless of what people think of you at any particular moment, one thing is certain?youre never as good or bad as they say you are. Its impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, but you can take peoples opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what people think about you, your self-worth comes only from within. My past equals my futureRepeated failures can erode your self-confidence and make it hard to believe youll achieve a better outcome in the future. Most of the time, these failures result from taking risks and trying to achieve something that isnt easy. Just remember that success lies in your ability to rise in the face of failure. Anything worth achieving is going to require you to take some risks, and you cant allow failure to stop you from believing in your ability to succeed. My emotions equal my realityIf youve readEmotional Intelligence 2.0, you know how to take an objective look at your feelings and separate fact from fiction. If not, you might want to read it. Batman 10

Batman 10 Batman 10 Batman 1.0 Since his debut 75 years ago in the pages of the venerated Detective Comics #27, Batman has spent billions of Bruce Waynes dollars developing a DARPA-worthy stockpile of improbably sophisticated weapons, vehicles, and computer systems. To advance his obsessive quest to avenge his parents violent slayings in a back-alley stick-up, he has given himself mechanized batlike abilities: night vision, long-range hearing, and gliding that offset his lack of in-born superpowers. But on the Dark Knights dodranscentennial, the question must be asked: Is he over-compensating? No one would accuse todays Batman of going soft. His portrayals in recent big-box-office films have intensified the dark aura of the character. But looking back on his gritty 1939 debut we see an even more unhinged hero who relied primarily on his fists, a scary costume, and the huge chip on his shoulder. The contents of Batmans prototype utility belt seem almost quaint today. Yet in the context of the pre-war world before transistors, lasers, and high-performance materials, its clear that creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger were inspired by the latest advances in science and engineering in some cases even imagining technologies that are only now taking shape. Beyond indulgence in fanboy nostalgia, there is real value in exploring Batmans relationship with technologies both real and fanciful, says science writer Agnieszka Biskup. Through books like Batman Science: The Real-World Science Behind Batmans Gear (2014, Capstone Young Readers, co-written with Tammy Enz), Biskup shows kids that there are no limits to the possibilities through careers in science and engineering. I hope my readers will be inspired to think about how things work, how ideas can be turned into reality, and how its possible to make a career in science and technology, she says. I want them to be inspired to think beyond the ordinary and not be afraid of the impossible. She cites a number of real technologies that were likely inspired by sci-fi or comic strips. Star Trek gave rise to the mobile phone. The taser, short for Thomas A. Swifts Electric Rifle, took its lead from the serialized adventures of teen inventor Tom Swift. Im not saying that all engineers and scientists are fans, but those who are have said how sci-fi inspired them to go into real science fields, she notes. These five items from Batmans earliest utility belt have remained among his go-to weapons for 75 years. They were state-of-the-art at the time and they have kept up with the times as technology evolved, perhaps inspiring todays young people to discover their true identities as budding scientists or engineers. The cover of Detective Comics #27 that featured the first appearance of Batman. Image: Wikimedia Commons 5. Utility Belt First appearance: Detective Comics #27, May 1939 Although it wasnt mentioned by name, the utility belt is recognizable in Batmans very first appearance, complete with impossibly small compartments to hold his first gear. However, in the debut story the belt appears mainly to have kept his trunks up. Batman nabbed the bad guy with a common monkey wrench and a cheap sock to the jaw that knocked his foe into an open vat of acid. The utility belt has been described as comprising 10 cartridges or pockets attached to the outside of the belt and hidden compartments on the reverse side where batarangs are stashed. Some early depictions built a few gimmicks like a two-way radio and a camera right into the belt itself. Weve established that Batman was not above a cheap shot when necessary to bring a fiend to justice, but some of his tactics might be considered shocking by todays standards. When a sucker punch or head butt wouldnt suffice, Batman kept a range of chemical and biological weapons at his fingertips. From the biopathogen he carried in the event he needed to fain his own death, to the plastique and thermite fire bombs he rained down on crooks on the lamb, to the gas and smoke grenades used to evade capture, the Caped Crusader pushed the limits of the Geneva Convention. But the most devious WMD in his belt was reserved for his good friend and Justice League ally Superman. In the unlikely event the event the Man of Steel went rogue, Batman took it upon himself to keep a small stash of kryptonite on hand at all times. 4. The Batarang First appearance: Detective Comics #31, September 1939 Batmans oldest and most versatile fighting tool the batarang is a prime example of a weapon that keeps coming back as new design and engineering methods evolve. Inspired by some of the oldest hunting and fighting tools on the planet, Batmans batarangs incorporate new knowledge in aerodynamic design for ultra-precise throwing and return performance. Engineered composite materials create an ultra-light and virtually indestructible throwing weapon, not unlike the shurikens favored by Japanese samurai. And in combination with the equally venerable batrope and micromachined grapnel launcher, the batarang has long enabled Batman to scale and swing among Gotham Citys skyscrapers en route to a crime. Biskup cites the batarangs grapple hook set-up as perhaps the prime example of an emerging real-life technology that Batman had perfected decades earlier. In the book, she profiles real devices such as a compressed air launcher capable of sending a titanium hook and Kevlar line some 120 feet into the air (T-PLS, Digital Force Technologies, San Diego, CA) and a lightweight battery-powered rope ascender developed at MIT that pulls a person and his or her gear at about 10 feet per second. 3. The Batrope First appearance: Detective Comics #28, June 1939 The Batrope deserves recognition of its own, if for no other reason than it kept Batman from having to take the elevator to his foes rooftop lairs. The earliest batrope was made of silk, the strongest fiber in common use in the days before nylon and its synthetic cousins. Whatever materials he engineered into his batropes over the years, Batman somehow incorporated the properties of both dynamic and static rope construction giving him the bounce needed to absorb shocks from free falls while providing durability for tough rappelling and hauling jobs. The Batmobile of 1963-65. It was built using a 1956 Oldsmobile Rocket 88. Image: Wikimedia Commons 2. Bat Vehicles BATPLANE (AUTO-GYRO), first appearance: Detective Comics #32, October 1939 BATMOBILE, first appearance: Detective Comics #35, January 1940 Without the power of flight and unwilling to rely on public transportation to reach the crime scene, Batman has built a fleet of land, sea, and space vehicles that add dramatically to his firepower. Originally he used a fast but no-frills roadster from Bruce Waynes garage. Not until 1940 did readers get an eyeful of the first stylized, tricked-out version of a Batmobile. The Batplane or Bat Gyro as he first called it was the first of the many high-tech conveyances bearing the Bat prefix. The auto-gyro a hybrid of a fixed-wing aircraft and the helicopters that would soon appear was a mainstay in the world of pulp crime fiction. Invented in 1920 by Spanish engineer Juan de la Cierva, the gyroplane incorporated a non-motorized top rotor that used air currents to augment the conventional airplane engine and front prop. With after-market rocket tubes affixed to the wings, the odd craft kept one step ahead of the Jokers own increasingly sophisticated bag of technological tricks. 1. Handgun When it comes to embodying the early Batmans brooding, vengeful persona, nothing in the utility belt can match the piece he wore in his first, bloody year of crime fighting. Yes, Batman packed heat early on in his obsessive quest for justice. Eventually, the characters staunch anti-gun stance became part of his mystique, but in those early days, it was his ultimate means of justice. Quickly phased out of the storyline after Kanes editors complained, his sidearm was replaced with a perky sidekick, Robin the Boy Wonder, and the character lost a significant degree of his trademark darkness. Although not explicitly identified by make and model, Batmans gun appears to have been a Colt .45 semiautomatic, which was already familiar to readers of the pulp detective The Shadow, who packed a pair. The classic M1911 model appeared in 1911, with a John Browning-designed .45 ammo cartridge fed by a seven-round detachable magazine inserted into the grip. The Colts sleek, cold-blue-steel design was perfect for Batmans image, but was soon traded for the higher-tech, lower-lethality items in the utility belt. Michael MacRae is an independent writer. For Further Discussion I want (readers) to be inspired to think beyond the ordinary and not be afraid of the impossible.Agnieszka Biskup, Author

Heres What You Missed At Glassdoors Biggest Event of the Year

Here's What You Missed At Glassdoor's Biggest Event of the Year Here's What You Missed At Glassdoor's Biggest Event of the Year It’s no secret that attracting qualified candidates is a huge pain point for recruiters. But the good news is that today, there’s an unprecedented amount of information on companies out there - and the best candidates are using that information to self-select into the right roles and organizations for them, ensuring success on both sides of the fence. But how exactly do you attract and retain those informed candidates? That’s exactly the question that Glassdoor Recruit - Glassdoor’s first-ever recruiting focused conference - set out to answer. Through a series of presentations, panels, workshops and more, Glassdoor Recruit shared invaluable information on how today’s leading organizations can attract and retain informed candidates who will add to their culture and drive business results. Here are a few highlights from the event. Glassdoor CEO Robert Hohman opened Recruit by welcoming the over 7,000 guests and shedding some light on the state of the talent market today . While recruiters struggle with things like budget constraints, competing with compensation and benefits and knowing where to advertise jobs, Hohman shared that the number one challenge was attracting quality candidates, according to 75 percent of participants in a recent poll from Glassdoor and a leading third-party analyst firm.* Today’s companies want candidates who are highly engaged, well-researched, and have the right expectations: in other words, informed candidates. This isn’t just important for filling open requisitions in the moment - survey participants agreed that informed candidates result in better retention, productivity, engagement, cooperation, and overall employee experience. So what can you do to bring those informed candidates into your company? “The best way to create these connections with candidates is for you to make sure that your recruiting and employer brand positioning reflects your reality,” Hohman said. “Informed candidates are literally out there right now on Glassdoor researching your company… the goal is to make sure that they understand what in your work is important and aligned with them.” To share the secrets of how they attract informed candidates, representatives from T-Mobile, Bain & Company, Hubspot and Major League Baseball took the stage in a panel moderated by J.T. O’Donnell, Founder & CEO of career advice site Work It Daily . They discussed some of the biggest challenges they face, ways they maximize efficiency in the recruiting process and how to address pointed questions. “We found we were recruiting the same way for everybody, and that didn’t work. You don’t recruit technology and agile specialists in a gig economy the same way you’d hire in volume for sales, or for care. We made a big move to embed our recruiters into our business units -  they still are a part of our human resources team, but they’re part of the local human resources team rather than centrally run.” - Martin Pisciotti, VP Employee Careers, T-Mobile “Working with Bain’s deep expertise and advanced analytics - we call them the AAG team - [we bring] those data scientists in to help us find more efficient ways to screen resumes. At the very least, we can take the thousands that we’re getting in the front end and cull that down to the set that has the highest potential candidate source.” - Keith Bevans, Partner, Global Head of Consultant Recruiting, Bain & Company “What we’ve invested in is a lot more targeted content at every stage of the funnel, so if you’re just visiting, we make it much more likely that you’ll convert. If you’re checking us out and considering an offer, we try and make content part of the reason you actually choose [Hubspot] so you don’t have to search for an employee who fits your profile or is dealing with similar challenges to you. We want you to find that readily and accessibly.” - Katie Burke, Chief People Officer, HubSpot “We’ve now started trying to encourage department heads, depending on the type of job they’re looking to fill, to give [candidates] a real-life test about what they might have to do - give them a hypothetical and have them write a memo, or give them a fact pattern and [ask], ‘How would you conduct the investigation?’ for example. You can learn a lot from that.” - Steven Gonzalez, Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel â€" Labor & Human Resources, Major League Baseball In a candid talk with the audience, United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz - one of the Highest Rated CEOs for 2017 - dove deep into the challenges he faced early on, including low employee morale, a near-death experience and one particular PR storm involving the forcible removal of a passenger from an aircraft. Despite all that, employee sentiment has skyrocketed under Munoz, in turn driving “ record-breaking on-time performance ” and rising customer satisfaction scores. The key to pulling it off was “stupid simple,” Munoz said: “I just stopped and listened, and I listened intently… It’s easy to think that you’re so smart, that you know what’s wrong and you go fix that, but [employees will say] ‘I wanted my oil changed, why did you give me new tires?’ When they know that they’ve provided input, and that you’ve listened and learned from it and provided feedback, it makes a massive difference in the simple thing that I need in our business: human interaction and human connection… from that, we’ve built a pretty good dynamic that you see hopefully when you travel.” As for what he hopes his legacy to be, Munoz shared: ‘“Churchill said, ‘It may be the end of the beginning, but we still have a long way to go.’ Flying 100 million+ customers with 700 flights in the air at any point in time in the day, there are eventually going to be failures, so we’ll continue to work on and fix that, and leave a culture of people really wanting to care about you.” Next up was Glassdoor Chief Economist Dr. Andrew Chamberlain , with concrete research on how employers can improve their candidate experience. This falls into four key buckets: One of the best ways to encourage more employees to apply? Improving your Glassdoor reviews! One study showed that candidates who saw positive reviews of a company were significantly more likely to apply than those who hadn’t. Furthermore, negative reviews mean applicants want higher starting salaries to compensate. Treating candidates well is critical, but you can’t go easy on them in the hiring process - Glassdoor research shows that more difficult interviews result in better employees. Be sure to move quickly, too - employers that take longer to hire get left behind. The top three factors that predict job satisfaction are career opportunities, quality of senior leaders and culture and values, all of which become increasingly important the longer employees stick around. Employees leave for three main reasons: stagnating in a role too long, the company culture is better elsewhere or the pay is better elsewhere. Being aware of and acting on these criteria can help you keep employees around for the long haul. “[It’s helpful] to think about the candidate journey as a lifecycle model… it’s a reminder to you that even after you hire great talent and you get them on board, you’re not done. You still have to tend to the candidate journey [and] keep them engaged. Because if you don’t, the big risk is ultimately, people will start looking around, they will look at the competition, and they will start a candidate’s journey somewhere else,” Chamberlain shared. With so many studies showing that diverse workforces lead to innovation and improved business performance, it’s no wonder that today’s employers are focused on attracting and retaining diverse talent. However, for many employers, it’s truly a challenge. Why is this the case? And what can employers learn from those who are leading in diversity and conclusion? Representatives from GoDaddy , Hyatt and The Washington Post joined Glassdoor Editorial Director Amy Elisa Jackson to discuss the topic in depth. “We don’t want to hire a cohort of people and then have them come in and go, ‘This is not the place for me - this is not the culture that I was sold by the recruiter,’ whatever that might be. So we wanted to make sure that it was definitely a place where they would feel included, they would feel like they could do the best work of their lives.” - Katee Van Horn, Vice President, Engagement & Inclusion, GoDaddy “We started an outreach and partnerships program and this was part of our talent marketing strategy, in saying let’s go and partner with the current leaders in the community - DC Web Women, Girls Who Code - and let’s partner with them one-on-one, build that relationship, and then work with them to build experiences that bring that community together… now we have hundreds of people coming together for an event, and we’re able to connect with them one-on-one and truly share our culture story.” - Brenna Child, Head of Talent Management & Employer Branding, The Washington Post “Until we can talk about this issue, it’s not going to go away. When you walk in a room, people say, ‘I don’t see color’… but the reality is that I am who I am. Let’s accept that and let’s move on to something bigger and greater where we all add value.” - Tyronne Stoudemire, Global Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion, Hyatt If there’s anyone who would be able to identify the ‘secret sauce’ of amazing organizations, it’s Josh Bersin, Principal Researcher and Founder of Bersin by Deloitte , an HR-focused research and advisory firm founded in 2001. In his presentation, Bersin laid out the five keys he and his team have identified that make up a great company. Employees, especially millennials, increasingly need to find meaning in the work they do. But how can you create meaning? A few key factors include autonomy, selection to fit, small teams and time for slack. Management’s role is to not only run the business, but to help employees realize their potential. Things like regular performance reviews, clear goal setting, coaching and feedback and leadership development all help employees thrive. Great workplaces lead to great work. Employers should focus on creating a flexible, humane work environment with open work spaces and an inclusive, diverse, recognition-rich culture. If employees are going to stick with an employer for the long term, they need to be able to see a career path for themselves within the company. Leaders can provide this by facilitating talent mobility, self and formal development, career growth among many paths and a high-impact learning culture. At the end of the day, culture truly is a top-down initiative. Rallying employees around a clear mission and purpose, investing in people, and communicating openly and transparently is a sure-fire way to earn employees’ trust. In the last formal sessions of the afternoon, attendees chose from three different hands-on learning labs. Led by Kimberlea Kozachenko, Senior Leader of Enterprise Culture & Development at ATB Financial , this lab explored how to use Glassdoor to bring in the candidates your organization needs. Among her tips: be open and transparent so that informed candidates can truly find the job that fits their life, have recruitment innovation along with a solid process and finally, use analytics to measure and refine your efforts. “Interviewers are brand ambassadors, and the interview has a direct reflection on your brand,” said Rod Adams, US Talent Acquisition Leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers and leader of this break-out lab. One way to improve your employer brand through interviews: timely interview processes. PwC was actually able to go from 6 days to schedule an interview to less than a day by using technology, such as video interviewing, to be more efficient! Michelle Wagner-Knapp, SVP of People at Evernote and Allie Hall, Customer Success Engineer at Textio teamed up to present their findings on what makes a successful job description. Hint: the ideal job listing is between 600 and 700 words, avoids cliche terms like “data-driven” and “stakeholders” and favors short sentences and bullet points over lengthy paragraphs. Of course, no conference is complete without a party at the end of the day, and Glassdoor Recruit certainly wasn’t an exception! After a few parting words from CEO Robert Hohman, attendees got a chance to unwind with cocktails, food and entertainment. Highlights included the photo booth full of props and confetti and the chance to hang out and network with new friends and connections. Between the knowledge-sharing, networking and fun, Glassdoor Recruit was one for the books. Didn’t make it to the recruiting conference of the year? TriNet Analysis Finds Employees Working More Than 5 Additional Hours per Month

TriNet Analysis Finds Employees Working More Than 5 Additional Hours per Month TriNet Analysis Finds Employees Working More Than 5 Additional Hours per Month Compared to the 12-month period leading up to the start of the Great Recession, employees in all industries except professional services saw an increase in monthly working hours during the recession. The percentage increase ranged from 2.6 percent to 5.6 percent over the prior year. According to the report, working hours have not returned to pre-recession levels and were 3 percent higher in 2013 than in 2007. The negative impact on productivity from overworked employees could reduce a companys ability to accomplish goals that translate to the bottom line. As a result, employers who encourage workers to take time off could get ahead of the competition by ensuring employees are at their maximum productivity and contribution to the firm. Key findings of the June 2014 TriNet SMBeat Report include: Leisure time decreased overall by 1.7 percent during the Great Recession and further decreased in 2013 by 3.4 percent compared to 2007. The information sector was impacted the most by the Great Recession, increasing working hours by 20.8 percent in 2013 compared to 2007. Working hours in the finance sector increased 2.6 percent during the Great Recession as compared to 2007. The amount of hours spent on PTO decreased by 12 percent during the Great Recession compared to 2007. The number of PTO hours taken in 2013 has further decreased, dropping 16.5 percent, or 1.03 hours, compared to 2007.

How Personality Tests Can Work For You - The Muse

How Personality Tests Can Work For You - The Muse How Personality Tests Can Work For You I’m a self-assessment junkie. Growing up, I lived for those quizzes that would tell you the perfect hairdo for your personality, or what to wear to prom based on your favorite band. I still sometimes spend an entire lunch break taking BuzzFeed quizzes that will tell me which version of Taylor Swift I am or which TV show I should live in. Even though I am aware that these are not “scientific” tests, there’s something appealing to me about this kind of self-discovery. When I learned, however, that there were assessments that could provide real value and help me find my perfect career path, I was thrilled. These questionnaires come in many shapes and sizes. Some look at your personality, others your aptitudes, still others your behaviors; some tests look at all of these things combined. There are free versions of many and others available for purchase. You’ve probably heard of some of them, such as the MBTI or the Strengths Finder. Maybe you’ve even taken one or more of these popular analyses and don’t know what to make of the results; can knowing your personality or how you think actually have any bearing on your career? I graduated armed with the knowledge that I was an INFJ based on the Myers-Briggs, my biggest strengths, Activator and Strategist, a Type 8 on the Enneagram scale, and my parachute was…maybe grey? But despite all of these tests, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I’d been expecting the results to magically unveil the one career that would make me happy, and because of that, I’d failed to use the assessments as the tools that they actually are. It took my college career counselor several conversations to help me understand that personality-type tests can’t replace hard work or self-reflection; rather, they’re merely a tool to better understand ourselves and how we operate in our environment. With that new outlook, I was able to narrow down a sea of job titles in a way that reflected my skills and temperament. Before you jump into all the tests looking for the key to your career path, take a moment to ask yourself some preliminary questions about your personality. If you first think about the basics of your personality, you’ll be able to find the best choice in a vast number of tests out there. First things first: 1. How Well Do You Know Yourself? Are you the type of person that likes to sit and think about your own personality, how you’d react to different situations, or daydream about your place in the world? Then self-assessments are probably inherently attractive to you. If you haven’t already taken an MBTI- or if you took it so long ago that you’ve forgotten your results- it’s a great place to start. This one asks you to make an instinctive choice between two options, and from there, it helps you understand broadly the way you view the world. Do you find crowds energizing or draining? Do you prefer to explore the world or your inner thoughts? Are you driven by feelings or by facts? While the results can help you get a sense of your worldview, they won’t lead you down any one path. That’s for you to decide. Next question to ask: 2. Do You Often Feel Lost or Anxious? If you tend to get overwhelmed by too many choices, a self-assessment might help you narrow down your career options and start to feel better about your strengths and where they might take you. If you don’t know yourself that well, the MBTI is still a good starting place. I also like 16personalities.com because of its design and its section on careers. Another good beginner choice, particularly if you want to connect the results immediately to potential careers is the Strong’s Interest Inventory, which helps organize your interests around specific career blocks. The test is grouped into six occupational areas rather than job titles (creative, realistic, social), and then provides examples of jobs in each area. You aren’t tied to any one path, but the Myers-Briggs plus the SII, taken together, can help you curate your choices and get you started. It’s important to know how you fare with the following question, too. 3. Are You Goal-Oriented? Maybe you have a career and want to advance into a leadership position. Or, perhaps your job requires a lot of verbal presentations and you need to find a way to improve or maximize your communication skills. If you’re goal-driven, and want to figure out a way to play to your strengths to advance your career, consider the Strengths Finder. This one was developed to identify your key strengths, thereby giving you strategies to use them effectively. More specific than the Myers-Briggs or the Interest Inventory, the Strengths Finder works best for people who already have a path in mind. It’s also important to know… 4. Are You a Test-Taker? While all assessments are designed to be tools to help you, it doesn’t mean that you need to take all of them together. Taking all of the tests can produce contradictory results, and if you take enough, you might even start to recognize the difference between the answers that are authentic, and ones that produce the result you want. While that’s impressive in its own way, gaming self-assessments to prove to yourself that you’re the extraverted go-getter you want people to think you are isn’t going to help you find career bliss. You can still take an assessment if you want to, but make sure that you are being honest in your answers, and try a test based in interests rather than psychoanalysis. How you answer the following question may help you determine which- if any- test to take: 5. Are You a Skeptic? Not everyone needs to take a self-assessment to find his or her path, or to understand how his or her values and aptitudes contribute to her working life. Trying to force yourself to use tests if you truly don’t want to will only hinder you. While understanding yourself is critical to choosing a career path, self-assessments aren’t the only way to do that. Keeping a journal, practicing meditation, talking to friends and family, and simply being aware of what you like, value, and prioritize are all ways to mentally check in with yourself and see if you’re on the path that’s right for you right now (remembering that things may change down the line). If you want to try one, great! Go into it with an open mind, and remember that no analysis can tell you what to do with your life. Use the tools as a way to better understand yourself and how your interests and skills might lead to a fulfilling career. Just don’t let yourself get locked into something you might not want- because a test told you to. You are the best interpreter of yourself, and only you can decide what path to take. How to visualize your success in three easy ways

How to visualize your success in three easy ways How to visualize your success in three easy ways Swimming pools were scarce on our Wyoming cattle ranch so I never learned how to swim. That didn’t pose a problem until I traveled to the Caribbean and wanted to scuba dive. Little did I know how I’d need to visualize success if I wanted to make that dive! One of the requirements of scuba diving certification was to descend ten feet under water, take off my mask and mouthpiece, and put them back on again. What if I lost my mask? Since I couldn’t swim, I was afraid I would drown in those few moments underwater without oxygen. The night before the test, I practiced how to visualize my success as I mimicked how I would take off the mask, hold it in my hand, replace it, and hold my breath. I visualized the sequence dozens of times. When it came time for my scuba dive certification, I performed the underwater portion exactly as I had visioned it.I could visualize my success and point to solid science to explain why it worked. Achieving my goal was about more than work and discipline - it was also about physiology. When we learn how to visualize success, it takes a hazy idea and turns it into a clear goal. It’s more than a quick fix. Here are 3 easy ways you can learn how to visualize your success:1. Be very intentional with the way you talk to yourselfResearchers conclude that the way in which we talk to ourselves about stress and threatening situations influences our neurobiological response to it. When we’re confronted with an obstacle or roadblock, very often we respond with words rooted in anger, fear, or anxiety. For example, our response may be: “Oh my God, this is awful.” “I can’t do this.” “It’s more than I can handle.” When we express these negative emotions, our body begins to release cortisol, a stress hormone. Your negative response does nothing but increase your stress levels.Special Forces soldiers are trained to experience the same fear that they would experience if they were captured, interrogated, or tortured. Fear from those kinds of experiences causes cortisol to spike as much as in a patient undergoing heart surgery - about 20 times the normal rate.Soldiers who successfully finish the training were found to have elevated levels of another hormone, neuropeptide Y, which is a natural relaxant.Research estimates that we say 300-1,000 words to ourselves per minute. We learn how to visualize our success when we intentionally choose positive responses to our circumstances so we can override the emotional part of our limbic brain system that regulates anxiety. How To Make It Work For You: Self-talk can shift the way you see your stressors. If you notice that you’ve expressed fear to yourself, “Oh my God, this is awful,” change your self-talk. Instead, visualize your success and say, “I know what to do here.” Your positive response will produce more neuropeptide Y.2. Give your brain a detailed image of your goalWe learn how to visualize our success when we look at ourselves in a different way when confronted with a challenge. When we learn how to visualize our success, our brain stores that information as a victory. Our brain releases a neurotransmitter called dopamine. This is the chemical that becomes active when we encounter situations that are linked to rewards from the past.Dopamine enables us to not only see rewards, but to move toward those rewards as well. This is the chemical that’s released whenever you think about your favorite meal, or open a new present.A Harvard study has demonstrated that our brain cannot tell the difference between a visualized image of our success and reality. However, it can tell the difference between a visualized image of su ccess and a fantasy.Fantasies can actually lessen our chance for success because our brain looks at fantasies as a threat! If people fantasize about their future, they are less prepared and more stressed when things don’t workout they way they had hoped. How To Make It Work For You: Visualize how you will succeed in various situations you might encounter in the future. Imagine how you will react and respond when criticized by a colleague. Predict your performance in the morning meeting. Rehearse your response to situations/conversation that might come up. Prepare for the hard questions that will come from your boss.3. Write your goals on paperIf it’s difficult for you to visualize what success would look like for you, consider ways you could write your goals on paper. It’s often easier to communicate goals into words where you have quick access for on-the-go inspiration.Pen and paper visuals can help us envision images of the bigger picture. Those cues help to better store and retrieve information because our brain is more of an image processor than word processor.According to science, two things happen when we write things on paper. First, we store information that pertains to our goal in a place that is easy to access and review at any time.Second, writing on paper improves the way our brain encodes the information. Encoding is the process by which the things we see and think travel to our brain’s hippocampus where it’s analyzed. The brain decides what gets stored in long-term memory and what is discarded. When we write our goals on paper, there is a much greater chance the details of our goals are remembered. How To Make It Work For You: We’ve become so reliant upon our computers that we upload everything via our keyboard to Evernote. Look at a journal, or even a piece of paper, as a productivity tool. Write down your goal and prioritize next steps. When you prioritize, it forces the brain to interact with information rather than simply react to i t. It also forces different parts of the brain (emotional and cerebral) to interact with each other.I want to leave you with one of my favorite quotes from Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor. He talks about the power of visualization:“There’s one reason why I’m here today. What kept me alive in a situation where others had given up hope and died was the dream that someday I’d be here telling you how I survived the concentration camps. I’ve never been here before. I’ve never seen any of you before. I’ve never given this speech before. But in my dreams I’ve stood before you in this room and said these words a thousand times.”This  article  first appeared on  LaraeQuy.com.

The one thing that changed my perspective on happiness

The one thing that changed my perspective on happiness The one thing that changed my perspective on happiness I studied Psychology at Cornell College but when I was in school, there was not a class for positivity - “positivity psychology” was a new term for me. It’s currently one of the most popular classes at Harvard, and I learned about it from Cleo Wade, the author of  Heart Talk:  Poetic Wisdom for a Better Life,  at a panel I moderated at the Women Empower Expo where she was the keynote speaker. I picked up her book after hearing her speak and was already finished reading it by the time I went to her conversation at Politics and Prose, one of my favorite local bookstores in Washington, DC. There are some people that I know I would be friends with if we had the chance to spend time together, and I’ll admit, the entire panel was a group of women that I would have  loved  to have dinner with. During the conversation, Cleo mentioned the Harvard class and she shared something that stuck with me:  the key to happiness is forgiving yourself.    It sounds so simple, but like many thing s in life, it’s easier said than done. Here are a few key things to remember when you are working on forgiving yourself:Admit how you got it wrongYou cannot make amends if you don’t believe that you did anything wrong and take ownership of what you did. You have to deal with it, face what you did, and the situation that was created by what you did. We are all human and we are all going to make mistakes - remember that nothing you do will change what happened and that you did the best that you could with the tools that you had at the time. Say it with me, I cannot undo the past. Say it again and again until you believe it.You can process what happened, give yourselves better tools for the future, pack it into a box, or rewrite it in your mind, but you can never change the past. What those things can do is allow you to let go of the pain of the past and allow you to learn the lesson that the past has to offer. What will not help you is beating yourself up for it over and over aga in.So you did something wrong, by accident or possibly knowing better.  What is done is done, now let’s deal with the feelings you have built up around it and forgive yourself.Prepare for a restart and try againWe all are our own worst critics, but beating ourselves up does not help us live in our light and be our best selves. Punishing yourself for the past only blocks you from your own happiness in the present. You are allowed to grow and to become a better person. Comparison is the thief of joy, so do not set your sights on anything other than being better than you were yesterday - if you focus on that, you will feel so much better than if you’re just worrying about what other people have. In order to live each day better than the last, you have to stop looking backwards.Make amends with others and yourself, keep what you have learned, and let go of the rest.Think about what happened and figure out what limiting beliefs you have built about yourself regarding it. Often we g o to the very worst thoughts about a situation - if you’ve had four jobs and lost two, you might start to believe that you cannot keep a job, despite evidence to the contrary in the other two jobs you kept. Just because you have lost jobs in the past does not mean that you can never keep a job; just because you have not found a relationship that fits, does not mean that you will be alone forever. The only way that these things become truth is if you start to believe them into happening. The things that you believe have power because you believe them. Let go of those negative beliefs to give yourself room to grow.A restart is not a redoWhile it’s important to forgive yourself, there are two things you have to remember: others may continue to hold on because you cannot control how anyone else thinks or feels, and forgiveness is not permission to do it again. You can’t force someone else’s forgiveness, and just because you apologize doesn’t mean that the person who feels slig hted will accept it; however, that does not mean have to continue to punish yourself for whatever happened. The world is a better place when we all have space to be better people than we were yesterday. In order to grow as people, we have to learn from our mistakes and our past. We have to forgive ourselves even when others might not. Forgiveness is an important and necessary part of building a loving and trusting relationship with yourself. The best thing that you can do to show your sincerity is to continue to grow as a person and to be the best version of yourself everyday. You (and the world!) deserve the best you have to offer. What happened before will never change - but you can. We are evolving, changing and growing constantly, the only thing that stops us from growing is our own limiting beliefs. An old dog can definitely learn new tricks - it might take a little longer, but if you believe it, you can achieve it. So believe that you are wonderful, worth, brilliant, and so l oved - because why waste your time believing anything else. If for now it’s only you loving yourself, that is a wonderful place to start, because you can teach other people how to love you too. This article was originally published on TheEverygirl.com.
